designing for spaces
(the end-of-the-year show)

Week 2 | 02.14.12

The message!

Goal: Determine exhibition message and whether grad/undergrad more integrated or more separate

First the class "speed-dated" to see what different folks were feeling about what the message should be, then broke into a grad group and an undergrad one. By the end of class it seemed the groups needed more time to consider what they want the message of the exhibiton to be.

Decisions?

For the moment, grad and undergrad will work on parallel tracks.

Prep for next week:

Undergrad group and grad group: Continue to craft the message for the show.  Circulate ideas via e-mail. Example: "graphic design is everywhere." (Written by Kate Johnston for the grads.) It's very concise and the point is clear. The message might very well be married to a form. For example "having a show literally 'everywhere' around school."

One note: You might just want to make the show about showing the work. Then you can just concentrate on interesting, unique and distinctive display strategies. Which is absolutely fine. The show can be about how the work is shown (as well as the work itself) as an example of how we are "experimental and engaging" (as Scott Massey suggested as a possible approach to the grads).

The one thing to keep on the straight and narrow about no matter what, is that this is a show of YOUR work. How you want to talk about it or frame it or contextualize it, is up to you, but you MUST show the work and it must be central to the show.

On Tuesday:

Present at least 3 alternative ideas for what you want your show's message to be and potentially the formal approach. Please be prepared with a small informal presentation — digital or on the wall. Include: Messages, sketches, inspirations, examples — whatever is helpful to communicating the ideas.

The objectives will be:

1. For you to shape and understand your own ideas by having to articulate them

2. To share the ideas with others (me and the grads) so that we can offer feedback. (To be absolutely clear: You guys will make the decision, the feedback is to support the ideas. The grads and I will NOT vote on them!)

3. To conclude with a better sense of the undergrad show's message so we can move forward.
