Prep for next week (aside from Deliverables):
Prelude
As a group you've already determined that the show needs to communicate the following qualities about work produced in the program (thanks, Kate, for providing the eloquent verbiage!):
"CalArts Graphic Design Program work is: collaborative, experimental, poetic, translational, post-disciplinary, multi-faceted, screen-printed, screen-shot, screen-zine, print zine, mind zine, mind share, multi-dimensional, social, transparent, opaque, process-based, proverb-based, methodological.
Next important step
Focus on possible exhibition titles (and perhaps even the curatorial statement) as means to narrow down options on how the work might be framed. Consider the gestalt. (Gestalt= the one idea or word that best defines this year in the Program as distinct from any other year.)
By Tuesday please come to class with 3 or so options for each of the following:
· Show title (grad and undergrad together)
· Related sub-title for the undergrad show
· Related sub-title for the grad show
It would also be ideal if you draft options for curatorial statements for the titles:
· For the Show at large
· how that idea applies to the grad show and
· how that idea applies the undergrad show
The curatorial statements examples I provided might helpful models. And, not to beat the horse too badly, the readings on exhibition making here will help you understand what I mean by "framing" the work (they're hard to read on the screen unless you download or print then).
An example of Title and Curatorial Statement:
Share Steal Borrow: The 2012 CalArts Graphic Design Program End-of-the-Year Show
Shape Steal Borrow showcases the exuberant work produced in the Graphic Design Program at CalArts from 2011-2012 and in every year level from undergrad to grad. It features the wide-range of production from the collaborative, experimental, poetic, translational, post-disciplinary, multi-faceted to screen-printed, screen-shot, screen-zine, print zine, mind zine, mind share, multi-dimensional, social, transparent, opaque, process-based, proverb-based, and methodological. The exhibition speaks to the nature of work produced in the program in conversation with today's context of graphic design production — a close-knit community of exchange, transformation, influence walking excitedly and trepidatiously the lines between sharing, stealing and borrowing.
