designing for spaces
(the end-of-the-year show)

Week 3 | 02.28.12

The message!

Goal: Determine exhibition message and whether grad/undergrad more integrated or more separate

The class was able to more or less pin down the exhibition message and exhibition concept:

"CalArts Graphic Design Program work is:

collaborative, experimental, poetic, translational, post-disciplinary, multi-faceted, screen-printed, screen-shot, screen-zine, print zine, mind zine, mind share, multi-dimensional, social, transparent, opaque, process-based, proverb-based, methodological.

It is infinite things, as diverse as the students who make it, and our diverse population is defined by this system of nodes which are distinct yet overlapping as they hum along together inside and outside the walls of CalArts."

Decisions.

Grad and undergrad will share exhibition message and concept and will work on parallel tracks to make sure needs of each program are addressed.

Prep for next week:

We agreed that the group would create a presentation of the exhibition concept/direction and "messages" — as well as goals, pitfalls, audience, and "spaces." This presentation should include sketches, diagrams, whatever will allow the class as a whole to understand, embrace, and recognize what we are doing. This presentation will also be elaborated over the next weeks into a presentation to share everyone in the Program so we get buy-in and generate enthusiasm from all year levels.

There is now a master task list/schedule that more or less accounts for every task it will take to complete all the "Spaces" of The End of the Year Show (Curatorial, Online Exhibition, Physical Exhibition, Publicity). The list is organized by Teams. Next Tuesday and every Tuesday after, teams will have deliverables, so gets your socks pulled up and your gloves on! It'll be a wild and exciting ride! Your first deliverable is the presentation.

Chose a team to work on. (Note that there's lots of overlaps between teams, so the creative work and big decisions are shared. There will be presentations by each team to everyone so there will be coordination and group input.)
